Common questions

Why does Tacky ask for background location?

Only for the alerts you set up: a notification when you arrive at or leave a place, or pass a chain or category you chose. With no alerts turned on, Tacky doesn't use background location at all, and it never keeps a history of where you've been.

I lost my phone. Are my notes gone?

If you turned on sync, an encrypted copy is in your own Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone and iPad). Install Tacky on a new device of the same kind (Android to Android, iPhone or iPad to iPhone or iPad) and turn on sync with the same account: the key comes from your Google Password Manager or iCloud Keychain, or you can enter the recovery code shown in Settings → Sync.

Without sync, your notes are in any export you made, and possibly in your phone's own Google or iCloud backup (private notes stay encrypted there). Switching between Android and iPhone? Use Export and Import (private notes open only on a device with the same key). If you lose your account, every device and the recovery code, nobody can decrypt the synced copy, including us.

How do I back up or move my notes?

Open the menu and tap Export. Tacky creates a .zip file with your notes, places, alerts and photos, which you can save or send wherever you like. On the other phone, tap Import.

The file isn't password-protected, except for private notes, which stay encrypted. Keep it somewhere safe.

Does Tacky cost anything?

No. There's no subscription, nothing to buy and no ads.
